anyway to keep this in alignment when rolling along the spine?

It rolls pretty straight if used on wall to spine and maybe on floor to back spine.

Can this be heated up?

Yes, it is made of silicone which is highly heat stable.......We recommend warm water, as the microwave can break them down over time.

anyway to keep this in alignment when rolling along the spine?

For the RAD Rollers, we suggest you just relax over the roller, rather than actual rolling back and forth, that way you can give the spine enough time to relax and 'drape' over the roller.

how are these different than cheaper peanut balls?

I am not sure I am sure what your questions is.
