Regular Expressions Cookbook: Detailed Solutions in Eight Programming Languages 2nd Edition

Like writing style, you can read all over the book and choose what you need to learn or use.

Recently, I was tasked with implementing of a password validation - a trivial task to those who deal with this kind of a problem on a frequent basis. I did not fall into the category. Needless to say, I was looking for not just a "recipe", so to speak, but also, for a little bit extra; in that particular situation, I had to come up with solutions for .NET, JavaScript and Java. God bless Google and all the wealth of information you can find on the Internet nowadays. But we all know it's that abundance that, sometimes or all the times, can make it difficult to find the answer you need.Based on the fact I have given FIVE stars to the book, you may guess I was happy to find the information I needed to solve my problem.The book provides wealth of information on the syntax of regular expressions and their different flavors. The book represents a very well balanced fusion of the regular expression basics and details, which makes it a very valuable aid to any software developer.

I maintain the Python Improved syntax highlighting language definition for the Sublime Text code editor, and needed to get up to speed on regexes in general, plus have a good handy reference at hand where I could quickly look stuff up. I browsed through a number of regex titles from O'Reilly and elsewhere, and finally decided on this one because of the reviews and structure. I have not been disappointed in the least. The recipe-based format is great for finding exactly what you need quickly ("How do I match a sequence ahead without capturing it?"), and the multi-language explanations are great for transitioning from one language to another. I primarily use Python and Oniguruma (the regex engine used by Ruby), but also need to run PCRE searches as well, and this book has been great for learning the small differences between them. It's always within arm's reach at my desk, and along with regex101.com has been a fantastic resource for learning this arcane yet incredibly powerful language.

This is a pretty big book and admittedly, this can mean that some of the concepts are quite elaborated on (perhaps too much). It’s not a bad book, but I would recommend also getting some other books.

So far, I like the contents of the book (I also purchased Friedl's book and I like them both), but the quality is dissapointing. The pages are very thin and the book doesn't seem to be of durable quality, and also did not arrive in good condition. That's a shame.

This was a good purchase. Normally I'm not a big fan of "cookbook" style programming guides, but RegEx was kicking my butt... so I had to do something! As a .Net programmer who also occasionally dabbles in other environments, I really appreciated the approach of separate descriptions for each environment.The range of examples is broad - in a good sense. Most of them are practical, real-world applications for most programmers, so understanding what they're trying to accomplish really helped in understanding the "how" of the implementation.

If you are interested in regex, this book and "Mastering Regular Expressions" by Friedl should be at the top of your list.

No es un libro que requiera constante lectura y que lo leas de primero a fin. Más bien, es un libro para aquellos quienes comenzamos con expresiones regulares y que, durante nuestro aprendizaje, tenemos dudas de cómo o por qué usar una u otra cosa.El libro se enfoca en darnos "recetas" (de ahí el cookbook) sobre cómo resolver ciertos problemas. Además de incluir la solución para diversos lenguajes, nos provee una basta explicación del por qué la solución funciona.Sin duda, la mejor ayuda sobre RegEx que recibí.

Very comprehensive and clear in everything it covers. I would have liked an appendix that listed the operators with simple examples. Even so this will be very useful.

Finde das Buch super. Viele fertige Regex um sofort Erfolg zu haben. Man spart sich so sehr viel Zeit und bisher habe ich bei der Verwendung keine Fehler gehabt.

assumes more knowledge than I expected. This is not a fault, just something to think of when you're looking for a first book on REs
