Jeep 4.0 Engines-OP: How to Rebuild and Modify (Workbench How-to) [Shepard, Larry] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Jeep 4.0 Engines-OP: How to Rebuild and Modify (Workbench How-to) Review: Great info on 4.0 - Seems like a great guide.. Review: Great pictures, good info. - I used this book as an aid to replacing a head vs an entire overhaul, so can't talk about all of content. However, the parts I needed were clearly illustrated and very useful. Very high quality color photos and slick paper. Nothing like a Chilton's or Haynes in that respect. There was a section on strokers that I was hoping for a little more detail on... but understandable it was only high level I guess, the book's focus in the breaking down, refurbishing, and reassembly of the 4.0. Not a hot rodding book.

Extremely detailed!
This book is awesome if you plan to rebuild your 4.0. It is extremely detailed and has everything from piston ring gap specs to ring orientation, all the way down to how to use plastigauge. It has just about every single torque spec on the engine, and even detailed instructions on how to install the engine into your vehicle. Not to mention probably over 80 sources that the book is derived from, so it seems to be a trustworthy source. If you're building a 4.0, this will help drastically

Good info for the 4.0 l.
Great book for regular rebuilding, but if you're wanting to do a stroker, there's not enough information. It only covers the internal parts.

Very well written and easy to follow
This book has been amazing in the building of my offroad toy. Plan to get others in the series and would absolutely suggest if you want to learn.

Does not appear to have information on the nnewer 4.0L engines.
Very detailed book, however it does not cover the newer 4.0L engines. The 4.0L in my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee has coil on plug, not a distributor. No coverage of it in the book. Also the cam sensor and its associated drive common of the distributor less engine is not covered at all. Another point is in the cam retention and cam gear and timing set installation. Other than that an excellent book.

Buy the book if you are planning to build a 4.0!
It has been the early 1980's since I have rebuilt an engine. This book is a good reference and has some pages of interest to me. Written by a person who was an engineer for Chrysler during the development of the 4.0 engine. The torque patterns and torque specs are worth the price alone. This book is a great read before you tackle the job of rebuilding the 4.0. Even if you are a seasoned rebuilder, this book has special tips that are specific to the 4.0. It also has a section on building a stroker engine. It took 5 days working a little after work each night to build the engine, just taking my time, no suprises. Great book.
