Beginning Programming with C++ For Dummies (For Dummies Series) 2nd Edition

1. Pointer and OOP are the two major parts I am most interested at learning, and of course it covered. Regarding to OOP, I suggest compare Chapter 26, 28, 29 side by side while reading.2. Stephen extensively used code examples to illustrate points, and most importantly they are neither redundant nor over-simplified, so that I could master the features in affordable time.3. I would expect diagrams and some figurative examples, but it surprising to see Stephen's humor, e.g. code quoted: output << "Stephen is suave and handsome\n" << "and definitely note balding prematurely" << endl; . yeah, you make it Stephen.In sum, I learnt a lot. Importantly, its value still exists even though I have finished reading it. And I would keep it as 'code manual' or 'guide book' before I enter to higher level.

I have spent way too much money on way too many books on C++ in a desperate effort to learn this "mother of all high-level languages", and this has turned out to be the most down-to-earth and user-friendly one yet. Mind you, I'm only about 30 pages in, but everything I've read so far has been the best of the best in terms of writing style and clarity. This is looking to be that book I wish I'd had when I was first trying to learn C++.

I learned some things from this book, but frankly the writer is so "gabby." Certain sections just go on and on and on. I appreciate the plain language and anecdotal explanations, but it was often overdone.I am a beginning programmer and although I enjoy it quite a bit, there seems to be an enormous lack of good beginning texts out there. It's almost a graphic design issue. Why can't someone just write something with example code of the left-side of the page and thorough bullet-point explanations on the right side of the page? Easy to follow. I find myself sorting through paragraphs or disjointed online conversations to try and obtain answers to what must be basic questions that all of us have encountered as we begin to learn computer science.

I needed it because at 66 I'm relearning how to program computers as I did in1976.

Laid out exceptionally well. Easy to follow instructions. The only issue I have with this version is the fact that it's a little outdated.

This book makes learning C/C++ fun. It is easy to read and the explanations are easy to follow. The example programs highlight the subject matter effectively. Recommended

Do not make the mistake of buying this. Its an old edition and the content needed to work through the book is not hosted on the dummies website any longer. It came with no cd or online material that I can find.

I have not been able to locate the source code as instructed by the author. The source code printed in the text seems to have numerous errors and frequently fails to compile. I am only up to page 137 and it has been quite frustrating. C++ is not an easy language for a newbie and having a text full of errors makes it even more difficult. That is why access to the source code is so important in this case. The author uses a factorial problem that adds functionality as the book progresses. If you get stuck early on there is not much you can do. I think a simpler example would have been much more effective to illustrate the concepts. Because of these obstacles, I cannot recommend this book.
